MPU Process – From Offense to Successful MPU
How does an MPU proceed? If you face an MPU, you are certainly wondering about this question. In our MPU guide, we will walk you through the MPU process in detail. All steps from the offense to your Medical-Psychological Assessment (MPU) are thoroughly described.
Important Note on MPU Deadlines
To avoid wasting time or money during the process, the steps must be well coordinated, and MPU deadlines should be observed.
If you cannot meet MPU deadlines during the process (e.g., illness, long waiting times), be sure to apply for an MPU deadline extension in time.
Our Goal
Everyone wants to keep their MPU costs as low as possible and avoid wasting unnecessary time. As soon as it becomes apparent that a traffic offense could lead to an MPU, you should seek traffic psychological counseling.
Important Time Factors
Often the question arises whether you need abstinence and if yes, for 6 or 12 months. This question should be clarified as soon as possible to avoid wasting valuable time.
The organizational steps on your way to the MPU may also raise questions. And finally, you are probably wondering how to convince the expert of your fitness to drive.
Professional Support
Such questions are often not easy to answer yourself. You should clarify your questions with an experienced traffic psychologist and have the MPU process, preparation, and all costs transparently explained.
Remember, half-hearted preparation can quickly drive your MPU costs up — especially if you have to repeat the MPU.

MPU FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about the Medical-Psychological Assessment
Answers to the most important questions about the Medical-Psychological Assessment (MPU)
Who needs to take the MPU?
Alcohol-related incidents
If the MPU is mandated due to an alcohol-related offense (usually from a BAC of 1.6‰ or repeated incidents), the focus will be on recognizing and addressing the alcohol issue.
Depending on your case, there are usually two possible approaches:
- Total abstinence from alcohol, or
- Controlled drinking, discussed with a psychological evaluator.
Regardless of the chosen approach, you must provide medical evidence that supports your abstinence or controlled drinking. This includes either ETG tests (for abstinence) or lab values such as Gamma-GT and CDT (for controlled drinking).
Drug-related incidents
For drug-related issues, the authorities first assess whether there is a risk of substance abuse, an advanced addiction problem, or full dependency before setting any time requirements.
During a consultation, we will clarify the following points, among others:
- Do I need to provide drug-free proof for 6, 12, or 15 months?
- Am I required to attend addiction therapy sessions?
- Is alcohol use also relevant and are test results needed for it?
MPU due to criminal offenses
An MPU may be required in cases such as:
- Serious offenses related to road traffic.
- Crimes that raise general concerns about driving fitness.
- Repeat offenses involving traffic-related violations.
MPU due to points in the traffic violation register
If your point total exceeds the allowed limit (usually 8 or more), an MPU is often ordered to reassess your fitness to drive.
MPU due to medical conditions
Medical conditions that may impair your driving ability (e.g., epilepsy, diabetes, mental health issues) can also require you to undergo an MPU.
How long does an MPU take?
The actual Medical-Psychological Assessment typically takes between 2.5 and 4 hours. It is completed in a single session at an authorized testing center. The process includes a medical exam and various psychological tests designed to evaluate your driving suitability.
What are the costs?
The cost of the Medical-Psychological Assessment is no longer regulated by a fixed fee schedule. The price depends on the reason for the assessment. We are happy to explain the details in a personal consultation.
